About MyOBDCode

Free, accurate automotive diagnostics for every car owner — no mechanic's knowledge required.

Why we built this

The check engine light came on. Most car owners have two options: pay $80–$150 for a mechanic to plug in a scanner, or search the internet and wade through forums full of conflicting, often wrong advice. Neither option is good enough.

MyOBDCode was built to fix that. We believe every car owner deserves immediate access to accurate diagnostic information — the same information a mechanic has — without paying for it and without needing to understand automotive engineering.

When you look up a code on MyOBDCode, you get the actual causes ranked by likelihood, realistic repair cost ranges, urgency guidance that tells you whether you can drive to work tomorrow or need a tow truck today, and specific questions to ask any mechanic so you cannot be overcharged. That is what we set out to provide — and it is free.

Our data sources

Accuracy matters when someone is deciding whether to drive their car or call a tow truck. Our data comes from the following authoritative sources:

NHTSA vPIC API
VIN decoding and vehicle specifications are pulled directly from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official vPIC database — the same data source used by dealerships and DMVs.
NHTSA Complaints & Recalls DB
All recall data is sourced from NHTSA's public recall database. We query this in real time so recall information is always current, not cached from months ago.
SAE International OBD-II Standard
OBD-II diagnostic trouble codes follow the SAE J1979 standard. Our code descriptions, causes, and urgency ratings are based on this standard supplemented with real-world repair frequency data.
Google Places API
Our mechanic finder uses the Google Places API to surface real, current shop information including ratings, hours, and verified addresses.

Editorial standards

All content on MyOBDCode — including code descriptions, repair guides, and blog articles — is written and reviewed with the following commitments:

Urgency ratings reflect real-world risk. We do not exaggerate urgency to drive more repair bookings.
Repair cost ranges are based on aggregated real-world market data and updated regularly. We show ranges rather than single figures because costs genuinely vary by region, vehicle age, and shop type.
Cause likelihood rankings reflect statistical repair frequency for that specific code — we do not list rare causes first to make repairs sound more expensive.
All sponsored content and affiliate relationships are clearly disclosed. Amazon Parts links and insurance comparison links are always labeled as sponsored.
We do not accept payment from repair shops or parts manufacturers to influence our code descriptions, cause rankings, or repair recommendations.

Who we are

MyOBDCode is built and maintained by StormGlass Interactive Inc — a software development company focused on building useful, accurate tools for everyday problems.

We are not affiliated with any automotive manufacturer, repair chain, or parts company. Our only financial relationships are disclosed affiliate partnerships — Amazon Associates for parts links and insurance comparison partners — that do not influence our diagnostic content in any way.

MyOBDCode is and will remain free to use. No account required. No paywall. No subscription. Your car threw a code — we decode it, free.
